Looking Back . . . . .
Our Past President Dudley Barnes, who passed away on January 9, 2004 after a short illness, was born on March 1, 1918 in Camp Belton, NB. He was a registered Professional Engineer who worked with the Canadian Standards Association (C.S.A.) for 37 years, commencing in Toronto as the company's Corporate Secretary until 1977 when he transferred to Richmond, B.C. to take up the position of Manager, Pacific Region.
He first joined Rotary in 1955 in Eastern Canada and shortly after arriving in Richmond in 1977, he continued his Rotary career with our Rotary club serving as its President in 1983-1984.
The first exchange Luncheon Visit from the then newly formed Chinatown Rotary Club was held in December 1983 during Dudley's term of office. The sum of $800 was raised at that meeting for the Christmas hamper fund and thereafter it was decided to make this exchange visit an annual event- an event that ceased last year, nearly 20 years to the date.
It was also during Dudley's term of office that revenue and expenses for Club Service activities were separated from Community services and charitable activities, and plans were soon after put into motion to incorporate the Club as a charitable organization so as to enable donations to our worthy projects, to be claimed as income tax deductions.
After from their involvement with Rotary, Dudley and his wife Dorothy and their son the late James and two daughters Nancy and Judy, were avid sailors particularly on the BC waters.
Dudley and Dorothy were always very active and dedicated Rotarians and according to Dorothy, "He truly enjoyed his life in Rotary."
