How is Commercial Banking different from Small business banking?
Small business banking is the bread and butter of the Canadian economy and we rely on Small business for new job creation... I operate in Commercial Banking and how does it differ?
SBB typically is owner operator with staff of 5+ / CB is typically more organizationally structures say with a President, CFO, Operations Manager.. etc.
CB typically starts lending at $500K and we go up to $20MM. SBB is more off the rack whereas CB we customize our financing solution (including cash management)
Bank operates in segments... so start at SBB > to > CB > to Corporate > to TD Securities (investment banking)
What type of deals do we do?
Simple real estate deals... financing light industrial strata warehouse and offices, whole distribution warehouses, multi unit residential and mixed use
Other end of spectrum are the Complex cash flow loans for: acquisitions, owner buyouts, restructuring and multi borrower lending with mezzanine debt layered on
Our bread and butter are: professionals, such as dentist, accountants and lawyers
wholesalers & distributors (our branch banks roughly 80% of the rice wholesalers in the lower mainland)
Import / export ...typically more imports here
Manufacturers and service companies
We do not do construction financing at Richmond as it is very specialized financing who we refer to our BC Real Estate team down town ...
Headwinds for 2014 and beyond...
Large fiscal debt in USA and Canada... recovery is slower than expected in Canada...ongoing quantitative Easing and new Fed. Reserve Chair woman
Federal Reserve.. find out who they are... look at the story... Federal Reserve and Jekyll island history
